Those people who’ve been in LA for a while may recall the “Tail O’ the Pup” an odd li’l hot dog stand, which isn’t around any more… (Google it if you’re interested)… though It was the inspiration for our Barfo Dawgz stand here in the strip…
Bunz is mellowing in the springtime socal weather. Sauntering down Hollywould Blvd with the birds chirping and the derelicts derelicting puts a girl in the mood for absolute destruction.
I salute your salute to Al. Gone but apparently not forgotten. Also a nice, sneaky way to tell exactly where our heroes are at this very moment. (I can Google Earth it! Ain’t technology wonderful?)
Odd, now that you mention it, I recalled that Al St. John does have an actual star on the walk, but somehow, until now, it never occurred to me to check where it is… (I just googled it – the star is on the north side of the blvd on the 6300 block, that’s the first block west of Vine street)… Oops! I just realized, as they started near Wally Cox’s star, which is near the intersection of the Blvd and Cayhuenga, that would mean that Bunz & Katz have only walked a couple of blocks… I’d rather imagined that they’d gotten farther than that! Incidentally, there is no hot dog stand in that vicinity – um. Unless you walk south on Vine… there used to be a place somewhat south of the Blvd, though it wasn’t the Pup, just some other nondescript burger joint – don’t know if it’s still there…
Incidentally, for those of you who’ve never heard of Al St. John (no he wasn’t a Pope!) He’s probably best remembered as playing the second banana to Rosco Arbuckle, in so many of his 2 reel silent comedies for Keystone and Comique studios…
Which reminds me, some years back I came across the question of,
“Which western actor played the same character, in the most feature films?”
I immediately thought of, William L. Boyd – but with 66 Hopalong Cassidy films, under his belt, turns out that he’s only in 3rd place… Awww… (and Yes, I have watched every one!)
The surprise for 2nd place, is (you guessed it) our man of the hour and sidewalk puppy poo target: Al St. John – who played sidekick to Buster Crabb and Bob Steele and others, as “Fuzzy Q. Jones” in a whole bunch of now mostly forgotten, Poverty Row – B-Movie Oaters…
While, in case you’re still curious, the number one spot, at 88 films, is held by none other than – Gene Autry, playing – (wait for it)… “Gene Autry”!! (Yay! Cheers, Misc Crowd noises and a Raspberry) Why Gene of all the B-Western stars nearly always seemed to play himself is a puzzle – though it earned him another “Honor”… (He’s also the ONLY actor to have 5 Stars on the Boulevard)…
Just as an odd sidenote: Al St. John also appeared in 3 early Hopalong Cassidy movies – always playing a villainess henchman, he was sort of waisted – as he would have made a fun sidekick for Hoppy – but in these, he was apparently just there for a days work… though in one he wears bizarre tiger striped chaps – I sort’a wonder where, in what prop room, he found those?
Interesting how Katz, with his alien-technology hyper-aware all-channels cyber-whoozis brain, is apparently able to break the third wall at will… I like the bit in the last panel, where he is able to actually stand on the frame of the pic, while Bunz and the Barfo-Dawgs guy must perforce stand on the ground hidden below it…
Dear Josh, a request. If the earth is about to buy the farm, could we at least have a return walk on performance by your version of Captain America. I realize that he isn’t a super hero, but he did don the uniform if even for a photo shoot session. He didn’t have to invest in playing the part, unless maybe he also shared in some of Cap’s often antiquated ideals. At the time of earth’s demise maybe we might remember some of them.
