So, how did I become a well known authority on Prison life? Well… I once watched Laurel & Hardy in “The Second Hundred Years”… I also have 21 different versions of the Jimmy Rodgers classic, “He’s in the Jailhouse Now” on my hard drive… Does that sound like a lot? In comparison, I um, I also seem to have 43 versions of “The Hot Rod Race” & “Hod Rod Lincoln” (Its best known answer song) — true there’s little point to mentioning this in relationship to my *ahem* prison credentials, other than in at least some of these, the hot rodders end up in the pokey…
So, what does this have to do with anything… Not a lot I suppose… Though as long as we’re talkin’ music, Anyone for “Alice’s Restaurant”?
It’s kind’a amazing how many versions of that song there is! Seems even more amazing that the sequel “Answer Song” “Hot Rod Lincoln” is much better remembered than the original… Some groups like: “Asleep At The Wheel” or “Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen” used it as a regular part of their repertoire… There’s even a navalized version of the song…
“Well, me an my buddy ol’ swabby Joe, took off in a Can from old Saz-bow – The chow was poor an’ the fuel was low, but that dawg-gone Can could really go!
Along about in the middle of the night, we were steamin’ along as a Tin Can might, when a Cruiser behind us winked its lights, blew its whistle an’ pulled to the right…”
“Saz-Bow” is a countrified mis-pronunciation of “Sasebo Naval Base in the Nagasaki Prefecture on the southern island of Japan…
a “Can” is navy lingo for a Destroyer class of ship… WWII era Destroyers had little armor in comparison to larger ships like Cruisers and seemed about as structurally sound as a Tin Can, hence the nickname…
As per Typical of the genre, the race was won by an unexpected contender…
Hey, I’ve got that too, by Johnny Bond (who seems to have had the hit version of “Hot Rod Lincoln”)… The Jalopy version seems pretty much the same, just with brand names changed to generic terms… Makes me wonder if this perhaps wasn’t recorded as “Insurance” in case any of the brand trade mark holders complained – though I don’t believe that Ford or GM ever did…
There’s at least two versions of “Hot Rod Race, Navy Style” As you seem unfamiliar with this bit of nautical nonsense, I was tempted to tell you that it was won by a couple of Marines in a Rowboat – however, according to Mick Woodward, (the vocalist) the winner was: (Spoiler Alert) “There goin’ by, was a reserve JG, pushing a hopped up LST!”
For those of you not up on your nautical jargon, a “JG” is a Lieutenant junior grade – the lowest form of sea life, ranking slightly below a sea urchin…
While a “LST” stands for Landing Ship Tank, a bulky, inelegant sort of scow, used to lug heavy equipment to the shore and back – not known for speed, generally moves about as fast as a duck can paddle…
Being an alien invader from outer space, Bunz is likely breaking laws that have yet to be written. Think for a moment, what law of justice is being broken by Plan 9’s reanimation of dead people? Disturbing the peace?
I hadn’t heard of that Rabbit ditty – though I do recall Jimmy the Prez’s infamous Rabbit Story… One never knows, I suppose… Or speaking of a bite to the neck, perhaps Bunz may take inspiration from that “Most foul, cruel and bad tempered Bunny” that terrorized the Pythons during their Holy Grail Saga…
Perhaps we can all learn a lesson and take inspiration from our former Presidents at war… Washington commanded at Valley Forge, Jackson whupped the Brits at New Orleans, Harrison and Taylor killed some Indians (women, children and puppy dogs too), Pierce fell off his horse during the Mexican War, Grant battered the Confederates into submission, Teddy charged up San Juan Hill, Harry Truman commanded an artillery battery on the Meuse-Argonne of WWI… During WWII Dwight commanded the combined Allied Forces in Europe, while Reagan bravely managed the Pacific theater action from “Fort Roach” in Culver City California… George Bush the Senior would be shot down during the “Great Mariana’s Turkey Shoot” (sometime later his son would go AOL from the Air National Guard during Viet Nam)… Meanwhile back in WWII, Nixon & Ford were doing something or other war related far from the bullets… And in possibly their future presidential finest hour, John F. Kennedy’s PT109 was sunk by the Japanese – and Jimmy Carter was almost sunk by a Rabbit…
Just thinking of this magnificent heritage makes one quietly proud…
Actually Ford served aboard the carrier USS Monterrey(CVL-26) in the Pacific from June of ’43 to December of ’44. While Monterrey never took damage from combat it was not because she wasn’t in harms way. Nixon however, while he also joined the Navy, never went anywhere near combat. But to give the devil his due he, like Reagan, joined up and then went where he was sent.
Eh? It seems you are correct – I didn’t double check for Ford or Nixon, (was just typing from memory) but seems that Ford did serve aboard the Independence Class Carrier, USS Monterey (CVL-26) as an assistant navigator, athletic and antiaircraft battery officer… While Nixon served with the South Pacific Combat Air Transport Command, where he received a Letter of Commendation for Meritorious and efficient performance of duty in loading C47s… Though I must admit, my little Presidential spiel was most unfair to Jimmy Carter, who did serve on Submarines during the late 40s into the 50s and was part of the early nuclear sub program… Also, as far as I’ve been able to determine, no submarine that he ever served on was damaged by a Rabbit… But Y’know, that’s just not as funny…
Which recalls to mind: Or speaking of Bunnies – I just uploaded the Cutey Calendar for Feb (just a couple of days late) This includes a cute li’l Bunny Doll Paper Toy designed by my ol’ Navy Pal Sean… Just click on the Vixen image to go to the download page – What? Bunnies! Run away! Run Away!!

There’s “Hot Rod Jalopy,” for those who don’t want to play something that endorses a particular brand of car.

Somehow I just noticed the title of this strip: “Yardbirdz.” Musical themes abound, I guess.
A bonka boat selling gedunk?

And they… all… moved away from me on the bench…
“…and creating a nuisance.’ And they all came back, shook my hand, and we had a great time there on the bench.”
God I haven’t thought about the Great Alice’s Restaurant massa-cree in 40 years.
It’s them long words that impress the hardcases… like “absquatulation” and “nepotism…”

Income tax evasion.
Back to the two-different-color socks, I see…
Apparently her mini Prison Jumper and striped stockings were only for the Xmas party number…
By the way, I like the “Mom” tattoo on Frankenstein / “Moider.” Wonder whose arm it was originally?
Speaking of Arlo, those prisoners better watch out cause Bunz might be cwazy and she’ll bite them in the thwoat!
Oops, sorry, I was wrong. Tom Paxton wrote the Bunny Wunny song, not Arlo. Although Arlo covers it nicely.

“What? Behind the rabbit?”

And hey, Jimmy Carter? It was a very LARGE rabbit.
In 1941 to 1945, who knew any of these future Presidents would be President someday? (Well, except maybe JFK…)

Ummm…uhhhh…..I’m sorry, you were saying something about toy boats and calenders with dead rabbit presidents on them…?
Wow, you just never know when you might accidentally learn some history on this site. Music and presidential too.
