As Baseball season has started and Monday the15th was Jackie Robinson day, I thought we might do something Baseball related for our pin-up this week… This particular pix is perhaps interesting, as it’s one of the earliest that I inked of our disoriented duo, while I was still working out how they should look… They’re probably playing what we used to call “Chicken Base” – As we rarely had enough kids to make up two teams, Chicken Base just used two bases (Home & First)… Or anyway, that somewhat explains the title of this piece…
While it’s generally a bad idea to explain a joke – In this case, to explain what Katz means, or his thought processes anyway… Remember now, that as a “Robot” or Semi-Autonomous AI (or Artificial Intelligence) Katz isn’t exactly a “Computer” but is more like one than we are… As such, if they were play Baseball, probably the first thing that Katz would do, would be to download the rule book and copy it into his data banks… Very likely, he would also download every record (that still exists) of every game ever played – So he could not only quote every rule of the game, down to the minutia, but would also know every way to possibly circumvent it!
Okay so far? Now when Bunz says that she wants to play Baseball, Katz takes her at her word, and so when she mentions an act that’s an infraction of the rules (Hitting other players with the bat) being literal minded, Katz would jump in to correct her understanding of the rules… (If you play Baseball then you play by the rules – right?)
Now, should Bunz say that she wants to throw the rules out and clobber the opposition with the bat, then that would be a different matter for Katz – and probably perfectly okay with him! So Y’see, he’s not acting as her conscience – he’s just correcting her on the rules… (If I were to rewrite his line, I probably should have Katz mention the rule book)…
That line “impersonating sentient life forms”, right before vaporizing a couple of harmless characters, would haunt any sentient life form (that also had a conscience). I was giving her the benefit of the doubt, in placing its existence in the cat-AI. But then, maybe that IS the ETHICS of an invader. A good invader must (evidently) not have a conscience, in order to function according to the rules of the craft. That is a lot from a short gag of course. But I liked the killed characters more so than the lead characters.
Gee, that’s kind’a rough! You say that you liked those two Goofs, MORE than a Homicidal Alien Bunny Chick, bent on Global Eradication??? Oh Where have we gone Wrong?!?
For those of you keeping score at home, let us remind everyone that these (presumably Late and Lamented by at least one) Goofs were not exactly totally “harmless”, they were threatening to rough Bunz up or something… Plus, they did pick the fight – it’s not like Bunz started hassling them…
But possibly more pertinent… Eh, forget it – just read the next strip…

Aww, how cute, she looks almost harmless here… still, considering the last strip, I don’t trust her with that bat…
That reminds me — Here’s an idea sketch that seems to relate…
Awh, I see. Katz is her conscience, that she sometimes listens to. But obviously not always.

She’s both adorable in the costume, and adorable in her hardcoded urge to bludgeon and fracture!
