Remember Renee from last year? (a typical Japanese teen Tramp-ire) We’re a bit late for Halloween, “Sorry ’bout that Chief…” I’d planned out the pages so that this page should’ve been ready to post a few days before the trick & treats – but then, things happened that threw a monkey wrench into the schedule… That’s the downside – the upside being you get an extra Renee page (three instead of two)…
Note* Renee, is an anime within’ the Bunz & Katz series, (something like, Fearless Fosdick was a newspaper strip within the Li’l Abner comics)… I just point this out, in case you haven’t been following the continuity (such as it is)…
I’m fond of Renee, but if she tries to put the bite on me, I should mention that I’m broke.
And I actually remember Fearless Fosdick. I suspect he gave Chester Gould ulcers…
Odd thing, as a kid I didn’t at first grok that Fearless Fosdick was a comic strip within a comic… I used to wonder why the fearless one never met Li’l Abner or any of the Dogpatch riff-raff…
Chester Gould (back in the 60s) sort of borrowed the strip within a strip schtick… When Junior, the police sketch artist tried to sell a newspaper comic… In the Dick Tracy strip, Junior came up with a number of minimal drawing comics – The “Invisible Tribe” was one (all the characters were invisible, so all you saw were their word balloons)… Another was characters who were piles of dust (just a bunch of ink dots)… All in all, Fosdick was much funnier…
Incidentally, for a great Dick Tracy spoof, During WWII (February 15, 1945) “Command Performance” (a radio broadcast for servicemen) presented, “Dick Tracy in B-Flat”
with a fantastic cast, Featuring:
Bing Crosby as Tracy
Bob Hope as Flattop
Frank Sinatra as Shaky
Jimmy Durante as The Mole
Cass Daley as Gravel Gertie
Dinah Shore as Tess Trueheart
Judy Garland as Snowflake Falls
the Andrews Sisters as the Summer Sisters
Frank Morgan as Vitamin Flintheart
Jerry Colonna as Chief Brandon
Harry Von Zell as Judge Hooper
Uh… bluh…. So how does a real character like Kapitan Otto von Krakkt get into a fictional TV anime in Bunz & Katz’s real world? Does that mysterious Faberge/Egyptian Egg thingie shown way back in the May pages have anything to do with it? Aside from slowing down time, can it also switch reality streams due to Katz’s ham-fisted tinkering?
