For whatever it’s worth, I spent so much time workin’ on the calendar for this month that I didn’t get the Next B&K page finished… then this AM, while listening to an interview with Vin Skully on the radio, the nub of this strip’s idea began to percolate through my somewhat decrepit gray matter… So I “Quickly” (took a few hours) knocked this opening day page together – Hope you enjoy it…
So um… you don’t Grok the lovable losers of Wrigley Field?
But talk about Comix Predictions: Checking the box scores tonight, I see that both the Cubs and the South Side Sox lost on opening day – meaning, yes, as Bunz & Katz predicted, they are tied for Last Place!!
The last time I remember the Cubbies doing anything great I was a fresh-faced college student, Harry Carry was singing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game during the 7th inning stretch and Ron (The Penguin) Cey was playing third base.
I think I may have already mentioned this, but my own theory about the “Curse of the Cubs” (if there actually is a real Curse) is that they play in Wrigley Field – the Last existing Federal League park – and that it’s the peevish shades of the old Federal League, still seeking redress from the rather unfair decision of Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis (Before he became the first Commissioner of BaseBall) that doomed the Federals and that still foils the Cubs chances! In the great days of the Cubs, they played on the “West Side Grounds” an’ old wooden stadium long ago gone to the termites…
By the way, as we mentioned Blake Edwards’ “The Great Race” in the previous page’s comments… A few years ago, I was surprised to learn that the film was actually based upon a real event – the New York to Paris Race of 1908!
And they actually did it too! Three cars finished and they all claimed to be the winners… (This was due to various foibles along the way, causing some cars to be docked time) So that when the German Protos drove into Paris first, they’d been docked 30 days – meaning that four days later when the American Thomas Flyer putted across the finish line, they became the Official Winners… While the Italian Züst team who finished a couple of months later, claimed the “Moral Victory” as unlike the Americans & Germans, they Hadn’t cheated or taken unfair advantage…
In the film, the Great Leslie’s car the “Leslie Special” is a replica of the Thomas Flier – while Professor Fate’s “Hannibal Twin-8” looks nothing like any of the actual 1908 cars… At least some of these replica cars still exist – reportedly 4 “Leslie Specials” were built for the film and 5 “Hannibal Twin-8s” one of which is in the Petersen Automobile Museum, here in LA…
Ever hear of “the curse of dissing the Cubs?” Some celebrity comes and sings “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” in the seventh-inning stretch, and if this celebrity does a bad job of it, their career goes into the toilet.
And the Detroit Tigers win their opener 4-0 at home. Of course I won’t go see a game as I can’t carry my revolver in the stadium. And I won’t enter Detroit without it.
Well um… Y’know, considering some of the problems they’ve had with Dodger fans, I’d jus’ as soon go to a ballpark where people aren’t packing heat!
By the way, Did’ja know – the last time the Cubbies were in the Series, back in 1945, they lost to the Tigers in 7 games?
Also, the last time the Cubs Won the series, was in 1908, against – you guessed it, the Tigers… In fact, the Only team the Cubs have ever beat in the Series is the Tigers – twice in 1907 & 1908, their only two wins…
Well here it’s not the fans that are the problem. It’s the idlers who hang around the stadium who know that if you are seeing a game in person you’ve got money. Which they see as their solemn duty to forcibly relieve you of, and if you are lucky they might only leave you bleeding on the street instead of gracing a slab in the morgue.
Of course, there is the former comic strip “Shoe”, in one strip, they were singing “Take Me Out To The Ball Game”, the Cubs version goes: “If they don’t win ITS THE SAME”
For anyone looking for a Monday update today (the 13th) Check back tomorrow – The thing is, I had a minor crises last Friday, the Stylus for my Wacom tablet sort’a came apart (the Wacom is what one draws on to create Digital Artwork – or if not actual “Artwork” at least what I do) and the Stylus is NOT something that can easily be replaced, especially over a weekend! So anyway, I got the thing back together, but it’s not 100% functional which has slowed me down some… I’m currently working on the coloring of the character poses, but I doubt that I’ll get the whole page together today – I’ve been at it all night and I expect to run out of steam in a few hours… So, like I say, check back tomorrow and with any luck our story will continue…
Sorrows. Broken equipment and all that. Seen a lot of that in my ongoing exploration of the world of Comix-on-the-Net, though I don’t personally draw anything myself. I take it, too, the Stylus is a fairly high-ticket item?
Well, a stylus definitely costs a fair bit more than a Crayola… But that’s not the real problem… Y’see, you can’t just go into your average Art or Computer store and expect to find one – in fact, I only know of one place in Los Angeles which carries them (an’ they’re NOT open on weekends)… Otherwise you gotta order a Stylus from Wacom or Amazon and hope that it isn’t lost by the Postal Carrier…

Well, she was looking for a job…and that’s a job…
Sooo… what’s the joke about the Cubs?

I’m not prepared to have the Cubs win the World Series. It *is* one of the signs of the Apocalypse, after all…

Yes, what’s blue and white and lives in the cellar? The Cubs…
Speaking of baseball, the Jays started out ok – I wish they could bank some of those runs for a rainy day…
The calendar is great, thanks!
