It may be somewhat reassuring to suppose that after our species has totally screwed the pooch and gone extinct, that perhaps a crafty and intelligent species such as Raccoons may carry on – that is, if we haven’t so fouled the planet that nothing but microbes and roaches can still exist, (which is perhaps the more likely outcome)… After all, there are no guaranteed winners in Darwin’s great game of Natural Selection towards intelligence… While it would seem, through wars, pollution and pestilence, we have become our own worst enemy!
Yet, in this time of pestilence, we humans must count our own blessings… for instance, although my e-mail has inexplicably gone down, yet I am able to access the mordant wit and supreme silliness of Bunz & Katz (or in this instance, RAKOONZ)… truly a worthy consolation for my enforced electronic isolation…
Hey, but that was a FANTASY page! This here is a REALITY page! After all, you can’t expect wild animals to wear smexy clothes and speak English! But as for feral raccoons salvaging deposit cans and spending the money to get food… heck, everybody knows raccoons can do that!
What he said! “Brand New Animal” is an anime about a girl who transforms into a tanuki raccoon dog with strange powers, though not like a traditional folklore tanuki. Woo Hoo! Now that’s a shapely sheep!
July 1st: Our theme this month is the 4th with a sort of salute to our failing democracy, as Bunz & Katz hitch a ride on a Tomahawk cruise missile, much as Slim Pickins, who played Major “King” Kong, in the film, “Doctor Strangelove” rode the H-Bomb down to perdition, for one of the best film exits since “White Heat” when James Cagney yelled, “Made it, Ma! Top of the World!”

Bunz seems to be very much enjoying her Slim Pickins moment. But Katz, on the other hand does not look at all happy riding a Hydrogen Bomb – to point zero. Unlike Captain Atom, he [already] has a silvery coating. This without having a nuclear bomb blow up under his butt. What a way to start your super hero story.
BNA is kind of a resurgence in anthro anime series, probably the first time two separate series popped up in less than a year. The other being Beastars, which I have kind of a love hate relationship with, because it’s cel shaded CG, with only the writing holding it together.
Odd, once you’d mentioned it, I took a look at “Beep Beep Ima Sheep”, but I didn’t spot any similarities to Tex Avery’s work at all…
*Note* a couple of months later (after typing the above) I realized that there are several odd animations of this Beep Beep ditty and it seems at least one of them does borrow a lot from Tex Avery’s cartoons – though initially the one I’d seen was just some animated sheep bouncing up and down…
There is, “Sheep Shape” from Paramount / Famous Studios 1946, as part of their Noveltoon series, Blackie the sheep goes in drag to foil the Wolf’s machinations, which does borrow a number of Avery’s gags, like the chase around a room’s walls, from “Swing Shift Cinderella” and of course the Wolf’s wild reactions to Blackie’s torch song recall several of Avery’s MGM cartoons with Red Hot Riding Hood or other Preston Blair animated chix…
I suppose it’s a fairly niche genre, though there is also Frank Tashlin’s “I Got Plenty of Mutton” (1944) where a wolf goes in drag as a sheep and lives to regret it… Oddly enough, this cartoon seems to have also been the inspiration for Chuck Jones’ Pepé Le Pew chase sequences…
There’s also the Mighty Mouse “Wolf! Wolf!” (1944) cartoon, where a different wolf goes in drag, though this time as Bo Peep, in order to lure some sheep to dinner… Perhaps there’s other cartoons of this ilk, though can’t think of any at the moment…
Sort of on a related note, it seems even at Disney Studios, Jack Hannah director and Writers: Nick George & Bill Berg were paying attention to Tex Avery’s cartoons, “Two Chips and a Miss” is a 1952 Chip and Dale cartoon (one of only 3 from the 40s to 50s without Donald Duck) Where the chipmunks visit a nightclub and do various Avery style takes as they ogle a female chipmunk chanteuse…

Aw, I was hoping for the sheep to maybe do a return appearance, or at least someone like the tanuki girl from BNA.

Eh? With a title of “Rakoonz” you were hoping for a Sheep?!? So what’s BNA?
BAN is for Brand New Animals. It’s a Japanese animated series. That’s all I could find in just a couple of minutes, if you want more just Google it!

Uh, okay… sounds like maybe worth a look…

Mister Gumby, et al, anyone ever catch the cartoon version of “Beep Beep Ima Sheep” on the tube of you? Lots of Avery refs in that one.
